Creative WOWSA

I have a huge love for graffiti. Every summer / fall I head down to the train yard and take pictures of the amazing art on the normally ugly and plain train cars. My hubby doesn’t really ‘get’ my interest in this type of art, but that’s exactly what I think it is “Art”.

I would LOVE it if CN Rail would hire graffiti artists to decorate their cars. Trains are so boring, imagine if they were in full color? They sure would turn heads and CN would get tons of attention.

Another one of my graffiti dreams is to take a trip to several huge cities and get someone who knows the area to take me around to the best graffiti art. To build up my collection of photos of graffiti would really be awesome!

Take a look at this guy’s art work. CN? Would you like his resume?

Daily Reads

Every day I go through my blog roll. I try to pick out at least five blogs to visit and comment on, sometimes it only ends up being three or so, but even then, I count it as a positive.

Today I was going through it and saw the Nie Nie blog. I realized I hadn’t been there in a while and was curious how Nie was doing lately. For those of you who haven’t heard, Nie Nie and her hubby, Christian, were involved in a plane crash resulting in severe burns. 30% of Christians body was covered with burns, and Nie’s was 80% covered. They’re slowly making it through the healing process, and it’s going to take a while to get back into a “normal” life, but they’re making progress.

In the meantime, Nie’s sister is taking over her blog and re-publishing Nie’s entries from way back when. It’s so beautiful to see her blog continuing! During this transition, C Jane, Nie’s sister is also publishing stories in her own blog (as she did before) but this time, she’s including stories Nie’s recovery and the experiences of looking after Nie’s children.

It’s beautiful.

Workin’ Workin’ Workin’

This weekend I didn’t sew and I only cut out one pattern. But I did work on my mugs! It’s funny how my mind is trained to think “If I sew, I’ve accomplished something”. I kept thinking all weekend, “oh crap, I haven’t done anything!”. But then I’d remember I had created seven 8 new mugs (one not shown because it doesn’t belong in the set), and I’d sigh with relief.

I also worked on my blog, notice the blogroll is back? Yay!!

Being bored Sunday night, I flipped through parts of Etsy I hadn’t been to in a while. I had fun Geolocating several different countries and found some great new artists!

I’ll definitely be featuring some of these new artist in the Friday Features.

I just want to explain myself here, before you watch the video. Some of you might know, some of you might not, that I’m a Christian. But that’s not why I’m posting this video. I’m not posting it to preach, or to be a bible-thumper, I’m posting it because the story is a beautiful one about a mother that has to give up her son and the struggle it must have been.

I had goosebumps when I watched this video, it’s such a beautiful story!

The singer here is Plumb, a wonderful creative mind that is really inspiring! Watch this next video to learn more about her song Cut and to see the passion she has behind her music.

A Bloggers Life

In Uncategorized on September 20, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Every week I post an entry on my blogging goals. I’ve made several goals for this blog, some of them are short term, some long term, some written down, some still in my head. Each week I write an entry on the goals I’ve written down and share if I’ve reached those goals that week or if I’ve fallen short.

This last week I had a comment from Corner Lot Creations asking how they would go about trying to get more views. Instead of answering in another comment where only a few people would see, I decided to write a longer entry about the question.

I’d like to say first, that I’m not a Blogging Specialist. I’ve been blogging for a little while now (I should really look up that date again), but I’m no pro. Damien, from Postcards from the Funny Farm, has been awesome in answering any questions I have and giving advice. He’s been a lifesaver!

I actually asked Damien this exact question when I started reading his blog. Until that point I was taking my blogging seriously, but not sure what else I could be doing other than writing entries and hoping views / readers / comments would come rolling in. When I saw Damien’s post on HIS goals and how HE was reaching them, I asked how he went about it. Did he wait for people to ask him to to a guest post, or did he go out and ask them? How did he build up his readership? I really had no idea how to go about it!

Here’s what I’ve learned, not only from Damiens’ answer to my questions, but from trial and error:

  1. Comment constantly on other blogs. I have a blog roll (which has disappeared since I changed the theme of this blog. It still can be found on my other blog though!) that I go through daily. I pick several blogs, and comment on them. It’s also important to find new blogs to comment on as well. Getting out there and reaching people who would normally not see your blog is important!
  2. Write frequently. I used to just blog a couple times a week. Here and there, whenever I felt like it. Which is fine, I guess. But if you’re looking to expand your readership, build it up and continually get visitors, your best bet is to post AT LEAST once a day. This way your readers will know that they can come to your blog and get a fresh read all the time.
  3. Sign up with blogging sites. I’ve joined Entrecard.com, blogcatalog.com and blogup and a couple more. I used to be nervous about signing up with sites like this, just because I wasn’t sure if they would suit my needs. But now I’ve realized that I need to just sign up with them, try it out for a while and then see if it’s working. If not, quit. If it is, I keep going.
  4. Not only should you sign up with these sites, you should become part of their community. Comment in their forums, post your link where you’re allowed to, add friends and show them appreciation.
  5. Post your link. As much as possible, without being spammy, post your blog link! Use it as your email signature, post it in forums asking for blogs links. I post my link in aprox. 7-10 Etsy forums daily. Just the ones asking for blog links, or sometimes after I sign off from a comment. I always get quite a few views from just doing this!

This is getting long, so I’ll tie it up.

Overall, I’ve seen that blogging is about networking. If you don’t let people know what you have to offer or how to find you, they won’t know those things.

My blog is still a work in progress. Slowly but surely it’s growing and even though it’s hard work, it’s worth every minute!

Feature Friday – Faves

In etsy on September 19, 2008 at 6:00 pm

It’s friday and I’m in the mood to spend money. So I’ve been searching through my Favorites to drool over some of the items.

This skirt is made by PinarEris, a really amazing artist on Etsy (of course!). The way this skirt is photographed is beautiful, and although my style isn’t steam-punk if it was mixed with different items it would be more ‘me’.

I’ve been looking for a lower V t-shirt for a while now and FluxProductions has exactly what I’m wanting. I love this color, the sleeves, the print…everything (:

A few years ago I went to university for a major in English and minor in Art. Before I went, I thought abstract art was a joke. I’m not sure what changed in uni but I’ve learned to love abstract stuff now. It may be that I realize the work behind it, the textures the techniques…

This piece by The Architect Studio is just stunning. I just want to study it, sit there and take it all in. Beautiful.

Mug Shots

In crafts, etsy on September 19, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I got the camera working! Well, sort of (: I have to turn it off after every picture, then back on again for the next shot. Not great, but at least I can take pictures…kinda.

The flowers on this mug are the ones I sketched for the last Gocco cards I made. I tried them again on this mug and a few friends have suggested I make a series around these images.

The picture above and the picture below are both the same mug. It reads “you look amazing today” and has a tea bag drawn into the mug with the tab “hanging” outside. Sometimes a girl just needs a cup of tea and a reminder that she looks great!

I made another one for my sister that says “Love is the best pick-me-up, but coffee with do for now”. It suites her perfectly (:

I’m planning on making quite a few more of these mugs and selling them at the craft fair this November. I need to find a hanger to display them on…Salvation Army should have a good one. I’ll paint it a funky color, red or orange, I’m thinking. I still need to look for a hanger for the bags, maybe I should go to the Army this afternoon.

While I’m thinking of this: What is everyone thinking about the new theme (the background) here on the KJ Blog? I like it, although there’s a couple things I need to work on (the blogroll has disappeared!) but I’d like to know what my readers are thinking! Let me know!
