In blog, crafts, etsy, seller, sellers, selling, store, stores on July 13, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Apparently I do. I dont’ really…but my brain is always forcing me to spend more money and learn new things. Dang you, brain!

I was going through my blogroll when I peeked into Erin Zam’s blog. I always love her entries but this one was even more inspiring. If you’re looking to start or try out a new craft technique, this is the entry to get you started. Check out her Etsy store while you’re in the clicky mood!

Learning Something New

In crafts, etsy, seller, sellers, selling, sewing, store, stores on July 10, 2008 at 7:21 pm

I think one of my downfalls is my love for learning a new craft. It’s a good thing because it stretches my mind and makes my crafting know-how go a bit further, but it also ends up costing a bunch of money. Like when I wanted to learn the Gocco Printer, or now, when I’d like to try out the button maker. Little projects I’ve tried like crocheting, don’t cost much and are UBER fun (uber is a word you just have to start useing, it’s the new “awesome” or “super” or “neato” to those addicted to Anchor Man). I try to find more projects like these, ones that won’t break the bank, but sometimes you just need to splurge and try something really big.

There’s a new video in the Storque today that you might want to check out if you’re looking for a new and affordable craft. It’s all about embroidery and learning the Running Stitch. Becca is a great teacher and has very clear instructions. Make sure you take a peek and learn about your new addiction!

I was busy sewing last night, a Kj Bag (this is the name I’ve stuck with for the big bags I’m making) out of the load of fabric I bought a couple of weekends ago. So far it looks amazing…if I may say so. I have a serious lust for the material I used…the colors are so amazing! I’ll post pictures this evening of the finished product and the steps I took to get there, make sure you come take a peek!

Techniques

In crafts, etsy, seller, sellers, selling, store, stores on July 7, 2008 at 6:00 pm

The other day, in my Get a Makeover post, I wrote about using different items in your product pictures to show the size of your products. You can do the obvious, and place a ruler in the picture (this is a good technique for fabric sellers) or you can be a bit more creative. Lusummers store has some great examples of this. See the cute little pin cushions at the top? As soon as you look at this picture you know the size of the product. She’s done it in a creative way, without using a ruler, by using an item we all are familiar with: a book.

I wanted to show you this picture as well because it’s a great example of a clickable picture. One of the best tips I’ve read on Etsy is this: Use a main picture that will draw in the viewers interest and make them want to click. To do this, it’s best if you just give them a hint of the product and make them have to click to see what exactly the item is. Have the picture at a weird angle, show them just a piece of it to get them curious. That’s exactly what Lusummers did here. From this picture, you don’t really know what the item is but it’s colorful, interesting, and fun so you want to click it to see more!

Make sure to apply this to your new items and when you’re updating old photos!

Spending Eye Money

I’m eye shopping. I’ve decided that’s what you call it on Etsy, not “window shopping”. Here’s what I’m wanting at the moment…

Feature Friday!

In crafts, etsy, seller, sellers, selling, store, stores on July 4, 2008 at 3:00 pm

It’s the end of another week, another BEAUTIFUL week here in BC. Finally it feels like summer here!!

This weeks feature is Dayler, a great stop for unique wallets. Really, you aren’t going to find these anywhere else…just Dayler. They’d be great as gifts or something to funk up your packpocket. I know a few boys who’d just love the gun wallet and my sister would fall head over heels for the Aaron Kraten one.

Dayler’s products suite just about every style. You know those hard to buy for teens? This is the gift they want. Trust me. It’s the “in” thing. Why not stuff a few bills in there while you’re at it, kids can always use money.

Selling on Etsy #3: Promoting

This is the third of the Selling on Etsy series! Make sure you’ve checked out #1: Laying Your Foundation and #2: Apply it!

For me, promoting my Etsy store is the fun part…other than actually creating my products. There’s so many options and so many fun ways you can promote your store! Here’s some ideas I’ve come up with:

  • Get custom made stickers and place them on suckers. You can either hand out the suckers when people ask about your products, send a few with sold items or ask stores to keep a cup of them on their counter.
  • I love the thought of promo magnets. The idea that people are constantly looking at their fridge makes for such a perfect long lasting promo plan! I have a magnet that Traci Bunkerssent with my purchase of some of her stamps…I see that magnet every single day and every time I do, I think “I need to go look at her new items”. And because I see that magnet every day, I remembered her name off the top of my head. That’s a huge asset!
  • Business cards, of course. You can get these as a template which you can print out yourself, pre-designed ones printed and sent to your doorstep, or sellers can work with you to design something completely custom. When you receive your cards, as business owners to set your cards on their front desk.

With any of these ideas, it’s always good to take a few tester products with you while you hand the promos out. This way, business owners (or managers) will see what exactly they are helping promote. Not only that, but they might become interested in one of your items and you might even make a few sales!

Lately, I’ve been using one of my bags as I do my errands around town or make business calls for the radio station. I’ve had so many compliments on the style the fabric, “ooo! Where did you get that?”. It’s been great to make connections about Etsy and my personal items even when that wasn’t even the purpose.

Always make sure you have some type of promo item with you when you go anywhere! When people ask about my bag, I hand them a card and let them know how easy it is to buy off of Etsy.

I used to visit Starbucks quite a bit (I had a gift certificate and had developed a lust for their Chai Tea!). I’d chat with the girls there while they made my coffee. I handed out several business cards and brought in samples of my work whenever they asked.

Remember, it’s always important to make friendly contact and let them know where to find you! Promotion is a huge part of selling on Etsy! If people don’t know about you…how will they find you? Don’t be afraid to go into stores and ask about them displaying your promos, the worst they can do is say “no”. And really, that’s not that bad!

Contest!!

In crafts, etsy, seller, sellers, store, stores on May 9, 2008 at 11:18 pm

Don’t forget to enter my CONTEST!! Here’s a quote from the contest entry a couple days ago, to enter, just leave a comment!

“I think I’ve pretty much decided to permanently transfer my blog here. See? On the left? There’s a link to my other Note Book….but I haven’t been into that one much lately. Blogspot just isn’t for me anymore. It’s hard to navigate, hard for people to comment on and the dang links keep posting themselves in weird spots (NOT where I’ve highlighted). Gah. So anyways, as Step One of the KJ Blog Move I am offering a contest!

Comment on this post within the next week (until Friday, May 16, 2008). At the end of the deadline I will pick a random winner and they will receive a SURPRISE from me! The surprise will be a mixture of items, depending on who the winner is (aka: guy or gal)…once they have won I will post a picture of their prize!

Obviously, PART of the prize will consist of an item (or two!) from my store…so make sure you check it out!”

Personal Development

In crafts, etsy, sellers, selling, store, Uncategorized on May 8, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Have you ever had a craving to improve yourself? Ok, maybe not “craving”, maybe it’s an urge, maybe it’s an encouragement…a small voice pushing you forward.

Every Wednesday for the past several months I have been getting together with a bride, her bridesmaids and several of our friends. Krystal, the bride, is the latest bride I’m helping with her wedding decorating. Anyways, during these get-togethers us girls have been making the center pieces for the reception. While we glue the paper on the boxes, stamp and cut, we chat (obviously, we’re girls after all!) about everything under the sun. Last Wednesday books became the subject.

I’m always up for improving myself. I’m so close to perfect it’s not even funny (ha! joke!) but even so, a little improvement never hurt anyone.  The newest book craze in our small town is The Shack. Apparently it’s an amazing book, bound to change your view on God. Which I’m always up for too! I get stuck in a box, God along with me, a lot of the time. I start to view him as this all mighty dictator, and it’s always nice to remind myself that he’s a loving and gentle God as well.

Also on my reading list, because of the girls discussion:

How People Grow (Dr. Cloud and Townsend are AMAZING!!)

We’ve been going through a huge family trial lately…drama drama drama. But from what I’ve heard this book would be good to help me see where people are coming from and how I can steer my conversation in a direction they will understand. It’s amazing, sometimes I’ll say something to someone in a certain way and they either won’t understand or will think I meant something completely different. I’ll re-word what I said and then they’ll nod “Ohhhh!”. I can’t wait to see how this book can help even more, especially through this family junk.

Ok, on to lighter things! I think I’ve pretty much decided to permanently transfer my blog here. See? On the left? There’s a link to my other Note Book….but I haven’t been into that one much lately. Blogspot just isn’t for me anymore. It’s hard to navigate, hard for people to comment on and the dang links keep posting themselves in weird spots (NOT where I’ve highlighted). Gah.
