I’m in a wedding mood today. A pretty mood. A “I want to be wearing a dress” mood.

And it’s Friday. Thank God.

Wedding Wednesday!

I think that my favorite part of weddings is the invitations…Well actually, I love the whole event, but the invitations are so awesome (: There’s so many ways to have your invitations personalized, it’s not even funny, but if you’re wanting something really different you can always look on Etsy.

I personally LOVE this shop, Inky Livie. It’s so completely different than anything else I’ve seen. You really can’t find these kind of invitations in the everyday shop. And, I figure, by using these invitations you’re going to have more guests too…who wouldn’t want to see what the wedding looks like if these are just the invitations?!

You’ve just got to visit their shop to see the other styles…they’re amazing. Really.

Ps: I just noticed the above invitation is for Meredith and Derek…off of Grey’s Anatomy perhaps?…I’m such a nerd.

Hot Saturday!

How cool is this shop?? Wall decals are the “new thing”! You can get funky sayings, have “decal pets” or build on the atmosphere of the room. Take this chandelier for instance, where else can you buy a chandelier for $30.00? And! It can be any color you want. Awesome hey?

Wall decal’ing is the perfect way to funk up any room in your house, or…your brick and mortar shop! (check out this cute little coffee cup!). And the decals don’t take up and floor space!

Wedding Wednesday – Favors

In Uncategorized on July 23, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I think the funnest thing about Weddings is the favors…and hardly any of the brides I’ve worked with have really paid these much attention! It’s so easy to make simple little things that make your guests see your appreciation for their support. Well, it’s easy to make things and also easy to buy things.

I remember when I was a kid, I used to love going to weddings because I wanted those candied almonds or pink and white mints. I was totally bummed when I was stuck with a book mark or something that wasn’t yummy! (:

Here’s some funky ideas to spice up the tables and make your guests talk about your wedding for years afterwards:

  • Personally, I’m addicted to M&Ms. Or just chocolate for that matter, but M&Ms are amazing. Did you know you can get customized M&Ms? You can pick the color and put your initials on them, how cool is that?
  • Why not put a splash of color on the tables? Jones Sodas offer customization (is that a word?) of their bottles! You can go with a toned down color like black or white or a bright color of red or blue… Either way, you’ll be able to have a picture of you and your lover, a funky saying and your choice of drink. All for your guests to enjoy at the wedding, or keep as a super cool remembrance of your wedding!
  • If you’re having an oriental theme, custom fortune cookies might be a great gift for your guests. I have a twisted sense of humor so I like the thought of saying something like “Thanks…for nothin'” or “This is a fake wedding, we actually signed the certificate months ago”.
  • My cousin made these great favors for her sisters wedding a couple years ago. There were containers of mints, pink green and white, beside these cute little bags and the guests just scooped the candies into their own bag. Cara made TONS of these bags, but if she can do it alone (and pregnant at the time!) it’s doable! She got the pattern for the bags by going to Michael’s and buying a prototype, tracing it and going from there. She bought a stamp with the bride and grooms initials and stamped every bag. Cute!

I used to think that the candy was the best part of a wedding, but now that I’ve helped plan a few I find the best part is how it gives an excuse to get together as a group. Whenever I help a bride out I always plan events with her and her bridesmaids. We all get together, put decorations together, make the centre pieces, decorate the hall and it really builds a deeper relationship between the bride and her girls. It also gives her a time to have a cup of tea and just have fun!

The biggest piece of advice I give brides is this: Just think, all you really need at the wedding is you, the groom and the certificate. Have fun in the process!

If you’re a bridesmaid, help the bride have fun, plan get togethers to accomplish the wedding planning, ask if there’s anything you can take over or be responsible for. If you’re a bride, learn to delegate and take a deep breath every now and then. This is your day, that means you should be having fun! Do whatever it takes to get rid of that stress and enjoy yourself! Even if that means dropping everything and having a bubble bath and a glass of wine.

Wedding Wednesday

In wedding on July 16, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I’m so excited about this Wednesday entry! I had so much fun coming up with this project, and I’m really excited to get going on the next ones!

Today’s Wedding Wednesday is about place settings. Sounds boring, huh? They don’t have to be! Place settings are one way to make the guests tables look full and unique. Making the place settings match the rest of the decor means that you don’t have to have a huge centre piece, the place settings will look like they are part of it!

For this type of setting, I started off with three little sprigs of faux fern, a 12″ piece of ribbon, a funky paper napkin and the cutlery.

  • The fern I got from Michael’s comes in a much bigger sprig. From this main piece, I cut these three little pieces. Each large fern will give you enough little sprigs for two settings.
  • I picked up the ribbon from WalMart, in a sale bin. If you’re getting married, always keep your colors in mind when you go shopping. You never know when you’ll find great sales bins!
  • I got the napkins from Extra Foods (kinda like Super Store) for two bucks. There was at least 50 napkins in one package. Like I said above, keeping your colors in mind, grab great deals when you see them!

Instructions for Place Setting #1:

1. Take the three sprigs of fern and tie the ribbon around them.

2. Fold the napkin in half and place the cutlery on top.

3. Set the finished fern piece on top of the cutlery.

This place setting is easy as pie and super cheap, just make sure to remember to be continually on the look out for good deals! When you see a coupon for an item you want, clip it out and make sure you use it.

There’s a couple more options for this style of place setting. You can buy little envelopes at your local stationary store to place the cutlery inside.

Fold the napkin in thirds, and place it in the envelope, making sure it sticks out a couple inches (depending on what you think looks best). Place the fern sprigs on top and voila!

Here’s a couple other styles I tried:

With the option above, I sealed a regular white envelope and cut a couple inches off the top. I made the napkin into a fan, put it into the envelope and placed the cutlery in between the creases. I then tied a ribbon around the envelope.

You could also stamp the envelope, either leaving the ribbon off or still including it. In the picture below I just bunched a normal paper napkin, pinching it in the middle and smoothing it in half.

Paper napkin might be a good option instead of renting cloth napkins or buying more expensive paper ones.

Or you could use a couple of ribbons to funk it up a bit, like I did below. I really like the look of the napkin folded nicely into the envelope here. I cut off the top of it, to get rid of the perferated look.

If you need to cut down on the price here’s some options:

  • Use only one or two fern sprigs per setting
  • Cut the ribbons shorter
  • Or use a stamp you already own

Remember: Deals Deals Deals!!! Where ever you go, look for the sales bins first before you look at the fully priced item. You might just find what you’re looking for at a really good discount! Use coupons whenever you can, little purchases add up so coupons really can help cut the costs. Also, ask for discounts. This can be a bit intimidating for some people, but just try it! What have you got to lose? A lot of stores have sympathy for brides and will be more than willing to give you a deal. If they say no, don’t be humiliated! Store clerks have so many customers come through their tills, it’s likely they won’t even remember who you are next time you shop there!

Don’t Forget!

Decorating!

We’re trying to get our act together and decorate our bedroom. We’ve been in our house now for three summers and of course, we’re leaving our own room as the last thing to decorate. I just don’t want to be like that! I’d like my room to be a quite get-away, a calming place to go and relax. Right now it’s a disaster!

I think I’m going to stick with lighter, toned down colors, a pale olive green sounds good. I need to get a new duvet cover (well, ok, I don’t…but it’s a really good excuse!) that would look good in the green color above. We have dark brown curtains already and we need to get new carpet, a cream colored burlap type.

I’m also planning on painting a small book shelf white and having a comphy chair in one of the corners.

I can’t wait to get started on this project (yes, another one to add to the list!!).

Wedding Ideas

So I’m in the wedding planning mood. It might be because I just got my toes wet at the last wedding I was at (spur of the moment decorating) or maybe because I co-worker has invited me to see her decoration goodies. Either way, I’m wanting to do something super freakin funky.

Wouldn’t these lanternsbe amazing? They’d be super cheap to make and would fill the space of a table really well. The best part is, they suit any style! Just pick out your colors and go with it! You could have a few of the lanterns, different sizes (maybe even different colors) in the centre of the table, with shallow bowls around them holding t-lights. Or instead of the t-lights, fill the bowls with candy for favors.

To decorate the table a bit more you could use these envelopes to hold the cutlery and a funky colored napkin. Either secure the envelope shut and cut an inch or so off the top, or find a great colored envelope the opens vertically.

To bring the lanterns into the overall theme a bit more, you could hang Chinese Lanterns from the ceiling. You can get all types of colors, this fresh white lantern is on sale right now and would look amazing along side a chocolate brown one!

If you’re wanting any ideas for your special day, let me know what your colors are and I’ll come up with some affordable and fun ways to decorate.
